Little Canada is a vast, highly detailed and animated journey through Canada in miniature.  This permanent attraction will open in summer 2020 in the heart of downtown Toronto, in a 50,000 square foot facility. Our goal is to be a top 10 attraction in Toronto, with anticipated attendance of over 500,000/year.

 Job Overview

 The Model Builder CAD Specialist is guided by our first value – we create to amaze!  As part of our Miniature Makers team, she/he will be responsible for designing and producing the detailed scale model structures of Little Canada, using CAD design, laser cutting and 3D printing fabrication tools.  This role leverages a combination of CAD and 3D design skills, physical production capabilities, and requires the ability to work in miniature proportions.

Key Responsibilities

  • The Model Builder CAD Specialist reports to, and is supported by, the Leader, Structures

  • Design and create scale model structures to varying parameters and levels of detail, primarily using AutoCAD

  • Design for and operates a laser cutter as a primary tool of fabrication to produce physical parts from CAD drawings

  • Design and produce 3D drawings of architectural elements for 3D printing, primarily using Rhino3D

  • Communicate and work directly with an on-site visual artist to help assemble, paint and detail model structures

  • Research source material and information needed to design accurate models

  • Establish and maintains strong relationships with the Build team

  • Embrace the Little Canada Health and Safety Program

  • Embody the values of Little Canada

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience

  • Practical experience and proficiency in Modelling software geared to the production of physical objects, preferably AutoCAD and/or Rhino3D. Other software such as Fusion 360, Solidworks, Blender, Illustrator would be an asset

  • Proficiency in accurate measurement and the appreciation of fine tolerances

  • Proficiency in converting 3 view drawings, pictures or other reference information to scale model structures

  • Proficiency in operating and monitoring a digital fabrication tools such as Laser Engraver, 3D printer, is preferred

  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints

  • Previous experience building model structures/objects is an asset

  • Experience with traditional model making techniques and knowledge of materials, glues and other model making products is an asset

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills; ability to build rapport and work collaboratively

  • Excellent organizational skills; able to plan and deliver against large pieces of work

  • Strong customer service orientation

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced team environment

  • Certification in safety programs would be an asset.

 Working Conditions

  • This role is based at our pilot site in Mississauga.  At some point in spring 2020, this role will move to our permanent site, in the heart of downtown Toronto.

  • Will require on-site presence for production work, use of tools, materials and machinery, collaborating with team members and team communications meetings. 

  • May require long periods working at a desk workspace, as well as operating and monitoring a laser cutter.
